April 25, 2012

People’s Choice Photography Contest. Photos may be turned in at the museum anytime from March 31, 2012 to April 25, 2012 at 1:00pm. Voting begins April 9, 2012.

Events and Activities – November 2011 – January 2012

General Meeting: November 30 at 7 pm natural photos of Bighorn Sheep in the wild–A story by Bob Burke of the Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep. See and hear whats going on with those icons of the desert mountains.

Holiday Schedule and Giant Book Sale: The museum will be open Thanksgiving Day but closed on Christmas Day. From November 24 to December 31 will be our BIG Holiday book sale where books in our gift shop will be 10% off for anybody and 20% off for museum members. We can mail books. We have the best collection of desert books, women in the west, Native American books and more.

A Brief 750,000 Year History of the Mojave River

On October 26, 2011 Dr. Norman Meek, professor at Cal State San Bernardino presented his program, “A Brief 750,000 Year History of the Mojave River”, to a full house at the Mojave River Valley Museum.

Mini-BBQ

I’ve never been to a mini-BBQ before- it’s quite the experience.  As far as I can tell the differences between this and a regular BBQ are as follows;  on a Wednesday, in the evening, doesn’t last as long, and there are many more desserts.

July – October, 2011 – Events and Activities

ACTIVITIES

Board Meetings:

On the first Wednesday of every month at 5:30. The next meetings are July 6, August 3, September 7, and October 5. Everyone is welcome.

Mini BBQ:  September 28 at 6pm to 8pm.  BBQ and potluck. Join us, bring a potential museum family or introduce your neighbor to their museum. Bring your table service and a favorite dish to share. Or, if you don’t feel like cooking, make a donation of $5 to the museum. Bring a comfortable chair to sit on.

Mojave River Trail Days: October 1st and 2nd at Helendale community park. For more information call 760-951-0006.

Badwater Ultramarathon: July 13th and 14th. Called the World’s Toughest Footrace, it covers 135 miles, non-stop, from Badwater up the sides of Mt Whitney. For more information go to AdventureCorps.com

45th Annual Museum BBQ:
Please save this date; Saturday May 14, 2011.

Our theme this year is “Survival in the Desert.”

Talks and displays will feature a variety of common and uncommon facets of desert survival.

The day will be fun and entertaining and will include dinner, Opportunity Drawing, gold panning, blacksmith demonstrations, carding and weaving demonstrations, and much more.

Archaeology 53B Field Trip

March 26 & April 9 & 10, 2011

This is a Barstow College field trip to the upper Mojave River, Horse Thief Canyon and the Cajon Pass: Orientation at the museum, March 26 from 7pm to 9:50pm. The class and field trip are on April 9 and 10 with an overnight in the Cajon Pass.

Students will camp at Muscupiabit, an old Indian Village (or for sissies, a motel) in the Cajon Pass. Instructor is Clifford J. Walker and the class costs $26 for one unit or participants may audit the class for no credit.
